Unfortunately, like every series, Dexter has had its ups and downs. Season 4 was arguably the best of any season, however, the fifth season was likely the worst. There was far too much pouting around from our favorite serial killer. I get it. Dexter lost his wife. It was a great twist but had I known it would have effected the story-line in the fifth season so drastically, I would have preferred it been left out.
In any case, I was a little hestitant going into the sixth season, particularly after seeing so many religious elements in the promos alone. Fortunately, the latest season takes the show back to its original roots and Dexter is now humerous and full of that odd energy that we can't put a finger on but have grown to miss over the span of a season. Read on for my recap of the sixth season premiere entitled Those Kinds of Things!
The episode starts off with a nice twist opening. Dexter has been stabbed and it has him so worried that he phones in to 911. As it turns out, the whole scenario has been staged just so Dexter can kill two EMTs with a defribrilattor. Classic Dexter.
The episode's primary purpose is to show how everyone is moving forward. Harrison is about to start preschool and Dexter decided to attend his 20 year class reunion. Of course, he always has alterior motives for his actions and he's only going to the reunion to kill a former classmate who murdered his wife. Still, the reunion is easily the most entertaining portion of the episode.
Dexter wasn't exactly part of the in crowd when he was in school. He finds, however, that a dead wife and a successful career is equivalent to make-over. Long story short, Dexter is in the spotlight which is something he's not used to and it's hilarious to watch his awkwardness in a large crowd of people. Nevertheless, he came to the reunion for one reason and one reason only, to kill Joe Walker (a former classmate). After struggling to get a blood sample to prove Joe murdered his wife, he finally does and what we get is the pleasure of watching Dexter take his bloody work to the top of a scoreboard.
Meanwhile, Deb and Quinn see a little action of their own. While Quinn tries to propose to Deb, a gunman bursts into the bar they're at and the two are forced to take him down. With the proposal interrupted, I imagine that will come up sometime again this season.
There's another story-line developing involving Colin Hanks and Edward James Olmos which will likely play out through the entire season. So far, they appear to be responsible for slicing open people and sewing them back up, but not before putting live, baby snakes inside them.
I'm feeling really good about the new season of Dexter so far. Like I said, I saw a lot of that same energy that I loved in past seasons. This episode was clever and fast-paced and I can only hope the remainder of the season is just as good. Stay tuned!
