Who says we can't review a 10 minute feature? Tuesday marked the debut of the second part of the fifth episode in the popular web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy which is based on the best-selling videogame franchise and to be honest, I'm really starting to lose interest.I really enjoyed the first two episodes in the series which is directed by Kevin Tancheroen who also directed the live-action short Mortal Kombat: Rebirth which has garnered over 10 million views on YouTube since its release. Now, however, the episodes seem to contain more animation than live-action. I mean, if I wanted animation, I'd just sit through the animated story segment at the beginning of most of the Mortal Kombat videogames.
Fortunately, the actual story is quite intriguing and the fight scenes in the live-action portions are very well choreographed for such a small budget. The actors are just meh, but that's expected considering they probably didn't get paid much at all for their work. Read on for more!
In the fifth episode, Tancheroen explores the origins of two of the most popular characters in the Mortal Kombat universe, Kitana and Mileena. Shao Kahn ambushed the kingdom of Kitana's parents. He attempted to kill her father, the king, but ended up killing an imposter. We'll get to that later.
Shao Kahn forces Kitana to be his daughter and her mother Sindel his wife. He realizes that once Kitana grows up and learns what he has done, she'll despise him thus he has her cloned. Mileena is the outcome and the two can't be told apart...that is until Mileena smiles and her razor sharp teeth are revealed.
Sindel ends up comitting suicide so her soul can merge with Kitana's to help her make the right decisions in life or something like that. Meanwhile, Shao Kahn trains Kitana and Mileena to be killers so they can carry out deadly assignments for him. One of those assignments is to assassinate Kitana's birth father. Of course, Kitana grew up believing Shao Kahn was her real father. Once Kitana realizes the man she's been sent to kill is her father, she hesitates. Fortunately, Mileena is there to do the honors of bringing him a gruesome demise.
The episode ends with Kitana realizing that her entire life has been a lie thus her new mission is to kill Shao Kahn and anybody who stands in her way.
Like I said, the story is pretty damn interesting and nicely written. It amazes me how much detail can be squeezed into ten minutes. Actually, all that detail was squeezed into about eight minutes. For some reason, we have to sit through a two minutes recap each time even though the episodes are only ten minutes in length. That's another letdown in my opinion. If they cut out the recaps and did away with the animated portions entirely, this could easily be one of the best web-series ever.
