So last night's episode of The Vampire Diaries was crazy, wasn't it? I mean it's undoubtedly one of the best episodes I've seen since the show debuted a couple of years back. Last night's episode marked the fifth episode of the third season which was entitled The Reckoning and I knew we were all in for a suspensful treat after Klaus discovered, during last week's episode, that Elena (the Doppleganger) was still alive. In The Reckoning, Caroline is determined to see that Elena, Bonnie, Tyler and Matt all enjoy a traditional senior Prank Night before the school year begins at Mystic Falls High School. However, when uninvited guests show up, it doesn't take long for the evening to take a deadly turn. Damon convinces Jeremy that he can use his new connection to the other side to help find a way to defeat Klaus. Finally, Klaus deepens his hold on Stefan and uses him for increasingly violent and dangerous purposes.

I can't tell you how many times I've said it, but I'm going to say it again, The Vampire Diaries has a tremendous team of writers working on the series. I mean it's like they can read my mind. For instance, while I like Klaus' character, the show was getting a bit tedious with him being the unstoppable villain that everyone's afraid to stand up to. When it was revealed in last week's episode that there's someone out there who Klaus is afraid of, well, that's when thing got interesting again. In addition, Klaus' return to Mystic Falls to punish Elena and all the other indiviuals involved in fooling him to believe the Doppleganger was dead was the icing on the cake.
The only thing that sucks (no pun intended) about the show is that we know the writers aren't going to let anything happen to Elena or Stefan or Damon for that matter, not for a while anyway. Elena is the primary character thus she'll likely be around until the end, whenever that may be. And what's The Vampire Diaries without Stefan and Damon? So even in the midst of all the suspense this week, I was pretty sure the trio would be safe. Nevertheless, after Klaus compelled Stefan to drink Elena's blood, I was sure she'd sustain a few injuries before all was said and done.
As much as I love Caroline and Tyler, I do often worry that the writers may kill one of them merely for shock value. When they ran into Rebekah and Caroline became protective of Tyler, I honestly thought she was going to bite the dust. Thankfully, she didn't. Unfortunately, the same can't be said about Tyler. What is fortunate, however, is that Tyler was Klaus' first success at creating a hybrid. Toward the end of the episode, he was walking around like nothing could touch him. The bad part is that he had to die in order for the transition to take effect. You know what they say, though, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
Lets talk about Jeremy's connection to the supernatural world. While I thought it was a nice twist to Bonnie bringing Jeremy back to life, it seemed rather pointless. When it was revealed that Jeremy could use his connection to the supernatural world to find a way to beat Klaus, however, now that was a perfect reminder as to why I watch the show in the first place. Still, I'm a bit confused with the whole scenario. Didn't Anna worn Jeremy to say away from Vikki at one point because her intentions weren't good? Perhaps the writers plan to elaborate on that later on in the season. So far, however, Vikki has done nothing I would consider bad. In fact, after Matt drowned himself to get in touch with her, she seemed to be anything but evil. She did tell Matt that she had a message for Bonnie and that could certainly be a hint of trouble to come later on. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
One thing is for sure, Klaus and his sister Rebekah are in serious trouble. It was revealed in last week's episode that the two have been on the run from a notorious vampire hunter for ages and that vampire hunter, Michael, was awakened by Katherine and Jeremy at the end of last night's episode. If he's a vampire hunter, however, that could easily mean Stefan, Damon, Caroline, Tyler, Alaric and even Elena could be in danger as well. If Michael wants to put an end to Klaus' plan to create more hybrids, he'll have to kill Elena as her blood is a key ingredient in the process.
