Last Thursday wrapped up yet another suspenseful season of The CW's hit series The Vampire Diaries. While I was impressed with the second season overall, the writers need to make some changes in season three if they plan to keep viewers tuning in on a regular basis. Kevin Williamson and the gang have done a tremendous job coming up with new angles, however, I noticed toward the end of season two that things were getting just a little bit repetitive.I think nearly every character on the show (that's still alive) has died at least once and somehow or another, they've come back to life. Considering there isn't much about The Vampire Diaries that is even remotely realistic, the writers have a lot of room to play around. Long story short, nothing is impossible in Mystic Falls. With that said, the writers have plenty of space to get creative. I mean, the first time an important character on the show died was tragic. They were then brought back to life and although we felt a little cheated, we were relieved at the same time. Over the span of two seasons, however, we've seen that scenario multiple times and it's just not that interesting anymore. That's precisely the reason I stopped watching Smallville. I mean, how many times can the characters switch bodies?
In any case, nearly a week has gone by since The Vampire Diaries season two finale. In other words, I've had about a week to think about some of the changes I'd like to see in season three as well as some entirely new angles I would like the show to take. You can read on to check out my list and be sure to share your thoughts! What changes would you like to see?
Considering The Vampire Diaries is actually based on a series of books of the same name, I know it isn't an easy task for the writers to take new angles. The biggest problem they run into is that if they venture too far away from the source material, fans of the books are likely going to get upset. I haven't actually read any of the books thus I'm not sure if the writers kept true to them. From what I've heard, Kevin Williamson and his team have followed the books rather closely with the exception of skipping around a bit and adding a few new details here and there. With that said, if it's possible to stick by the source material and add new details at the same time, why are the writers recycling elements they've already used? It just doesn't make sense.
The first change we need to see in season three has to do with the characters. I love the characters. The writers have done a remarkable job bringing them to life. There are so many traits I admire about each of them. Nevertheless, season three is going to get nowhere if they continue to focus on the same group of characters. I mean, honestly, how many bad things can happen to the same people? It's like every single day these people are faced with a massive dilemma or tragedy. At some point we'd just assume everyone on the show die and be done with it.
The second change ties into the first in that we really need to see more humans in Mystic Falls...normal humans. I mean, Bonnie is a witch, Stefan, Damon Alaric and Caroline are vampires, Tyler is a werewolf, I don't know what the hell Klaus is anymore, the sheriff is a vampire hunter and Jeremy is now a ghost whisperer or something like that. I think the only two normal people in the town are Matt and Elena. Oh yeah, and Tyler's mom. As far as primary characters are concerned, I think that about rounds it off. So yeah, we definitely need to see a handful of new characters come season three. It would certainly open a lot of doors for the writers.
Third, they really need to cut back on the witch stuff. Bonnie is one of my favorite characters on the show but when there's a spell for everything, it kind of spoils the suspense. It's like when Jeremy got shot during the season two finale, we all knew he wasn't going to die. Bringing him back to life was as simple as chanting a few phrases that were completely jibberish to us viewers. Grant it, the fact that Jeremy has to face severe consequences for getting a second in chance in life, now that's using imagination. Still, the whole find a witch to save the day scenario is getting overplayed. It's time for some fresh material.
Next problem, the vampires' ability to compell people is more annoying that anything else. Again, that's another reason I stopped watching Smallville. Somebody would find out Clark was really an alien with super powers, however, during a final show down he/she would hit their head and wouldn't remember a thing. I can't tell you how many times that happened in Smallville. While it's not exactly the same case in The Vampire Diaries, it's definitely similar. I specifically recall an episode in which Caroline finally came clean to Matt that she was a vampire and then she compelled him to forget. It's irritating.
Finally, please get rid of Klaus. I mean it was fun for awhile knowing there was a big, bad-ass vampire out there who was pulling all these strings, but it's not fun when there's nobody that will stand up to him. Elijah had potential to be his nemesis, but after the season two finale, we all know that isn't going to work. With that said, either get rid of Klaus or introduce someone on the same level as him.
That about wraps it up. I've raved about The Vampire Diaries since it debuted a couple of years back. It's still one of my favorite shows on television, however, I could lose interest real fast if some of these issues aren't addressed. What do you guys think? Do you agree and if so, what other changes would you like to see?
