tvDid you miss last night's episode of "Dexter"? Then you missed the best season finale the show has offered thus far. It's also one of the most tragic and unexpected conclusions in television history, but isn't that what got us hooked on the show in the first place? The writers are innovative and unpredictable. It's one of those few series where you forbid yourself from becoming attached to the characters because you never know who will bite the dust next. The final episode of the show's fourth season is titled "The Getaway" and it's packed with so many surprises that is certain to keep viewers on the edge of their couches. Inside, you can find a short recap of the season finale. Beware, major spoilers follow.

"The Getaway" left off, as always, with a huge cliffhanger, yet that's the least of your worries. Nearly the entire season has revolved around a rival serial killer of Dexter Morgan's known and feared by the public as the 'Trinity Killer'. Before the final episode of the season, the writers did a trememdous job in setting up a brutal showdown between Dexter (Michael C. Hall) and Trinity (John Lithgow). Even the producers had said previously that they wanted to deliver a shocking finale that no other show had done. They certainly hit the nail on the head.

*WARNING* - MAJOR SPOILERS FOLLOW

dexterIn the shocking final moments of the episode, Rita (Julie Benz), Dexter's wife, is brutally murdered by 'Trinity' in a bathtub while their baby, Harrison, is left crying in a pool of her blood. Dexter is left dwelling on memories of his own past in which he watched his mother die before his eyes and is soaked with her own blood. This obviously sets up the possibility of Harrison following in the same footsteps of Dexter.

“She loved being with us. We loved having her with us. She took it… professionally. She was greatly disappointed. She’s a professional. She works in television. She knew that this was a possibility", the producers said of Rita being killed off.

The writers also had an alternative ending for the finale, which was not chosen at the end. “While Dexter was packing to leave, he saw on the television that a child murderer had just escaped from prison. Either escaped or fallen thru the cracks. So he’s thinking, ‘Do I join Rita on vacation or do I…’ and then he looks towards the camera and he has this big decision,” producer Clyde Phillips explained.

While another major character meets their demise as well, we aren't going to be the ones to reveal to you who exactly it is. You'll just have to watch for yourself.
