Press PlayCan you believe it? Halloween is nearly upon us again which means its time to turn off your front porch light (to avoid those annoying trick-or-treaters), make up some popcorn and kick back to watch some of your favorite horror movies. Of course, you may be one of the many folks who has no idea which movies to watch. Hey, there are a lot of titles to choose from thus you can’t be held accountable. That’s where we come in. In this edition of ‘Press Play’, we’ve provided you with five of our favorite horror movies to watch, particularly on Halloween night. So read on for the list and be sure (if you don’t already own them) to get your ass out and rent them before all the copies are checked out!

Jaws (1975)

Hopefully you don’t plan on spending your Halloween at the beach. Even in the comfort of your own home, however, this terrifying classic will still scare the living hell out of you. This is director Steven Spielberg at his finest. Why is it so horrifying? Because it’s one of those few motion pictures that builds fear around realism. The events that take place in “Jaws” could happen to anybody. Just be careful how far you drift away from shore. Who knows what kind of beasts are lurking in the deep end of the water.

Friday the 13th (1980)

I don’t care what anybody says about this movie. “Friday the 13th” is one of the best slasher flicks of all time and a perfect watch anytime, especially on Halloween. If you remember, Jason Vorhees and his famous hockey mask aren’t introduced until later on in the franchise. By now, most of you horror fans have seen the film and a dozen times at that thus the twist ending isn’t as shocking as the first go around. For those of you who haven’t seen the movie (shame on you by the way), this Halloween is the perfect time to go back to the franchise’s original roots. Forget the remake. Forget the sequels. You haven’t seen “Friday the 13th” until you’ve seen the very first.

The Shining (1980)

Another movie on our list released during the 80’s, an excellent decade for horror pictures, is “The Shining”. If you’re looking for a more unsettling Halloween experience than this is the movie for you. Jack Nicholson delivers an unforgettable performance as a perfect husband who all at once turns into an axe-wielding psychopath. Most genre fans wouldn’t admit to just how brilliant the film actually was until further down the road. Now, however Stanley Kubrick’s film is raved as one of the best horror movies of all time and rightfully so!

Scream (1996)

Though more recent than some of the films on our list, this Wes Craven directed picture is undoubtedly already considered a genre classic. It completely jump-started a new era of slasher flicks (most of which were mere copycats). While “Scream” parodies films like “Halloween”, “Friday the 13th”” and “A Nightmare On Elm Street”, it’s a truly creepy, brilliantly crafted motion picture consisting of one of the best opening scenes in any horror flick to date and one of the most shocking conclusions as well. Prepare to ‘scream’ this Halloween!

Halloween (1978)

We couldn’t possibly forget arguably one of the best horror movies of all time. John Carpenter’s “Halloween” practically created a genre of its own and that is a generation of slasher franchises. This low budget horror flick doesn’t rely on blood and guts to frighten the audience. It works entirely on suspense. Each scene is brilliant structured, building tension with utter silence and moving to simple instrumentals. Of course, Jamie Lee Curtis does a magnificent job as the movie’s lead and thanks to her, we now have the well recognized Scream Queen Awards.

There you have it folks. Five truley terrifying horror movies that'll surely spice up your Halloween night! Did we forget something? Than feel free to share your favorite horror flicks below!
