Head 2 Head: Captain America Vs Green Lantern

Head 2 HeadIn case you've forgotten how this works since our last edition (which is highly likely), we take two subjectively similar motion pictures and pit them against one another. We take into consideration the cast, the story and many other factors to try and determine which of the two will be more successful in terms of box office performance.

In this edition of Head 2 Head, Captain America takes on the Green Lantern in what's sure to be a fight to the death. Green Lantern arrives in theaters June 17th, 2011 from Warner Bros. while Captain America: The First Avenger opens July 22nd, 2011 from Paramount Pictures. Read on to find out which superhero we believe will soar and which one will bore! Okay, we don't think either of these movies will bore, but we definitely feel one will be superior over the other.

Ryan Reynolds stars in Green Lantern as a test pilot who is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherwordly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe.

This is not Ryan Reynolds' first time portraying a superhero. In 2009, he portrayed the sarcastic and over-confident Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine who, after being turned into a lab rat, becomes the seemingly unstoppable villain Deadpool.

Chris Evans headlines Captain America: The First Avenger as Steve Rogers who, after being deemed unfit for military service, volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America's ideals.

Oddly enough, this isn't Chris Evans' first time portraying a superhero either. In 2005, Chris starred in Fantastic Four as the Human Torch. He also reprised his role in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer in 2007. Even more strange is that the Human Torch is similar to Wade Wilson in that he's sarcastic and over-confident.

As far as the two actors are concerned, I like them both. Two years ago, I would have said Chris is the better actor of the two if I had to choose, however, after the release of Buried in which Ryan Reynolds was forced to get in touch with his serious side, I think the two are more or less on the same scale. I think Ryan Reynolds is more of a household name than Chris Evans, however, I think Chris Evans likely has a more loyal fanbase.

Moving on, I've seen multiple trailers and TV spots for each film and to be honest, I think Captain America: The First Avenger is a better looking picture. Don't get me wrong, Green Lantern showcases a nice slew of special effects, however, the overall product seems a bit cheesy. Captain America, on the other hand, has a more realistic feel. In addition, Green Lantern has a lot of humor in the previews while Captain America keeps things serious. With that said, sometimes serious works and sometimes it doesn't.

As far as marketing is concerned, I think Green Lantern is winning in that department. Grant it, Green Lantern's release date is a lot closer than Captain America's but still, it's never to early to start promoting when it comes to motion pictures. It can mean the difference between a huge summer blockbuster and a total flop. Marketing is certainly a key factor when it comes to a movie's box office performance.

While I'll likely see both Green Lantern and Captain America in theaters, I'm not near as pumped to see the former and I'm not sure why. I've never laid a hand on the comics either film is based upon, but something tells me I'm going to be disappointed with Green Lantern. With that said, however, I think Green Lantern will have a better box office performance. Captain America seems to be aimed at a more mature group while Green Lantern will likely appeal to both younger and older viewers.

To wrap things up, I'm confident both films will have impressive box office numbers, however, Green Lantern will likely gross more out of the two. Like I said, Ryan Reynolds is more well known than Chris Evans and Green Lantern will likely appeal to a wider audience. What do you guys think? Feel free to chime in!
