aliceMovie review: Alice in Wonderland. If it’s Tim Burton, it’s bound to be twisted and twisted is “Alice in Wonderland” a more precise remake than the ‘not’ kid friendly “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” that ventured way off track and failed to scrutinize the elements that made the original a remarkable family-oriented picture. The humor was severely crude with the writers undoubtedly expecting the young ones to miss the foul one-liners and sexual innuendos, but even they had to have picked up on a fair share of the indecent humor considering just how obvious it actually was.

Fortunately, Burton has learned his lesson as “Alice in Wonderland”, a gloomy re-imagining of Disney’s animated cult-classic, is suitable for a wider audience. I don’t use the term cult-classic in reference to the size of the movie‘s fan-base, but I am insisting that the number of viewers that managed to grasp the underlying concept were unquestionably few indeed. Think the late ‘60s and the entirety of the ‘70s. This wasn’t a time period that most would look back upon as proud. Substance abuse was at its prime and the visuals in the original picture are enough evidence to conclude that the writers, artists, etc. were most likely not in their right minds.

This version of “Alice in Wonderland” is still aimed at those who are fans of Burton’s twisted imagination. The source material is certainly right down Burton’s road and with films like “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” and “Blow”, we can assume Johnny Depp’s arm wasn’t twisted to get him onboard the movie.

The visuals are stunning, the story is surprisingly intriguing and the characters are more whacky than fans of the original film could ask for. “Alice in Wonderland” is treat for the imagination and needless to say, this is a remake in which Tim Burton pays his dues to the original.
