'Shutter Island' has huge $40.2 million opening! Martin Scorsese's new movie "Shutter Island" was the widest released motion picture this past weekend thus it's no surprise that the film totally dominated the box office with an impressive $40.2 million in ticket sales. That's a new career high for both Scorsese's and star Leonardo DiCaprio, neither whom had scored a considerable hit since their last project together which was the Academy Award winning film "The Departed". It only took in $26.9 million its opening weekend back in 2006.
Meanwhile, the star-studded, rom-com "Valentine's Day" still managed to hug second place on the chart with a solid $17.2 million despite dropping off approximately 69.5 percent. Nevertheless, "Valentine's Day" had an incredible opening weekend raking in around $50 million which was far better than the similar star-studded, chick flick "He's Just Not That Into You".
