Some people might say that Sean Hayes, famously know as Jack McFarland from Will & Grace, has experienced the ups and downs on the roller coasters of life all in a few short months. After an article was published in Newsweek criticizing his ability to act, he is showing everyone his talents by not only being in his first Broadway show called Promises, Promises but also being nominated for a Tony for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. And wait, that’s not all he also hosting the awards show set to air on CBS, Sunday, June 13,2010 at 8pm/7c. Alas! One more tidbit to add to his resume is his new television show called Hot In Cleveland, which he executive produces, set to air Wednesdays on TV Land starting June 16th at 10pm/9c. Hayes participated in a press conference to promote the Tony Awards in which he answered questions about his hosting gig, nomination, and new duties as executive producer of a sitcom.Any reporters hoping to get a sound bite about his reaction to the Newsweek article were sorely disappointed as Hayes stayed mum about the scathing review and only answered questions about his hosting duties and nomination. He did tell everyone to expect a star studded line up of presenters including Cate Blanchett, Daniel Radcliffe, and Denzel Washington. Another greatly anticipated element to the show will be a performance by Green Day and the musical filled with their music called American Idiot is nominated for three awards. Read on for more!
“There is something for anybody and it’s just going to be a big party and hopefully everyone will enjoy it.” This is Hayes’ first time hosting any kind of awards show and did not watch the Tony’s as a young actor. “This is my first time attending, nominated, and hosting.” As for what he has planned for this year’s show Hayes wants to be an original. “I don’t want to repeat anything we have seen before me personally, and so we are going to do something completely different.” He was asked if he will take the stage with is fellow cast mate Kristen Chenoweth from Promises, Promises and was coy with his answer. “We have something scheduled at the Tony’s but I don’t want to give away any surprises. Parts and bits of the show (Promises, Promises) pop up during the telecast of the Tony’s as well as all the other Broadway shows. There is something in it for everybody and hopefully it will excite and lure people to come to New York and support Broadway. When Hayes was asked if the Newsweek article is going to be brought up in any way comically or seriously he quickly replied, “You have to tune in.”
In the musical comedy Promises, Promises Hayes plays a young executive on his way up in an insurance company who falls in love with a cafeteria waitress who has been very unlucky in love. It is based on the screenplay written by Billy Wilder for the 1960 Oscar winner for best picture The Apartment. This is Hayes first Broadway show and sees the experience as one of the best of his career. “One of the most challenging experiences of my life very, very difficult in the beginning getting into the rhythm and the sense of Broadway, but now that all the rigorous rehearsal process is over I am just having the time of my life.” Writing an acceptance speech is the last thing on his mind, he wants to concentrate on making this year’s Tony Awards funny and entertaining.
In his next project, Hayes puts on the producing hat with a new sitcom set to air on TV Land called Hot in Cleveland. Hayes sees this new job as a way to use a different part of his brain. “It’s great, the pressure is off from being a face of the show so that I enjoy, but there are good and bad to both (starring in a sitcom from producing a sitcom). But right now I can only see the good in producing. It is really, really fun to be creative in a different sense.” The show stars Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, and Wendie Malick as three friends on their way to Paris for a girl’s only celebration who accidentally wind up in Cleveland . Willing to embrace the Cleve as their new “promised-land” they rent a home from a sassy caretaker played by Betty White. With all the White’s recent attention, Hayes talked about adding her to the show. “It (Hot in Cleveland) is a very collaborative effort just like any project should be and ours is no different. When we sat down and thought of who would be the best Elka we just all thought of Betty White collaboratively. She is phenomenal is everything she does and we are lucky to get her.” Sean Hayes fans can also plan to “hear” him in the summer release of Cats & Dogs: the Revenge of Kitty Galore where he reprises his role as Mr. Tinkles, the cat who wanted to take over the world. Good luck to Sean in all of his endeavors and I know we will continue to see great things with this actor. Be sure to tune in to the Tony Awards Show airing air on CBS, Sunday, June 13, 2010 at 8pm /7c. Hot in Cleveland is set to air Wednesdays on TV Land starting June 16th at 10pm/9c.
