'Avatar' sees increase in ticket sales following Oscar nominations. James Cameron's "Avatar" is officially the biggest motion picture of all time. Last week, the film managed to knock "Titanic" out of the number one spot which its held for a decade as the highest grossing motion picture in the world. It was only this week, however, that "Avatar" also replaced "Titanic" as the highest grossing picture on the domestic charts. Now, having received nine Academy Award nominations, ticket sales don't appear to be slowing down for the sci-fi epic.
On Fandango, "Avatar" saw daily ticket sales increase by 45% shortly after the Oscar nominations were announced.
Just this year, the Academy expanded the 'Best Picture' category to now include 10 nominees and moviegoers appear to like the concept. In a poll conducted by Fandango, 83% of the voters said they liked the fact that the category now includes 10 motion pictures.
