Retired Texas Rangers Gus McRae and Woodrow Call are content to live out their remaining years in the tiny Texas town of Lonesome Dove. Then their old friend Jake comes to town, and tells them about the incredible oppurtunities for cattle ranching in Montana. Encouraged by this, Call convinces Gus and many other townspeople to go on a perilous cattle drive to Montana. Gus has another agenda though: his former sweetheart now lives in Nebraska, and he hopes for a second chance with her. As the drive goes on it takes on an epic scale, ultimately becoming what could well be called the central event in the lives of all involved.

Lonesome Dove. The name alone sounds like it was torn right out of the old west. Larry McMurtry wrote the classic novel that was later made even more famous when it was turned into a made-for-tv mini series in 1989. The movie would go on to be known as one of the most famous and critically acclaimed westerns of all time. Western veterans Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones head up the amazing cast consisting of Anjelica Huston, Diane Lane, Frederic Forrest, Robert Urich, and Ricky(i'll never call you Rick)Schroeder. Duvall and Jones are perfect alongside each other as Jones playing hardass Woodrow Call, and Duvall playing easygoer Gus McCrae. Diane Lane is gorgeous in her role and the rest of the cast are perfect. Lonesome Dove is a rare example that westerns can be good after the John Wayne and Clint Eastwood eras. Lonesome Dove may be the best western of the last 30 years.
