Episode Review: Whap (Pilot)
I'd only heard about "Harper's Island" a day prior to it's premiere on CBS. After viewing one thirty second spot, I was sold. The horror/drama described as "Scream" meets "And Then There Were None" doesn't waste anytime in getting into the fun.
The pilot opens on a group of friends and family boarding a boat which is to arrive on a secluded island where a wedding celebration is scheduled to take place. Henry (Christopher Gorman) and Trish (Katie Cassidy) are the bride and groom and are headed to the island with a small group of attendees.
Within the first ten minutes, the mystery begins to unravel as an unfortunate guest is shown strapped to the bottom of the boat and will meet a gruesome demise once the propellers are set in motion.
For a pilot, "Harper's Island" is well executed. There are a few dull moments, but for a first episode, it's expected considering the large number of characters that must be properly introduced.
Abby (Elaine Cassidy) is presented as the main character. She's a previous resident of the island and her mother was one of the victims in the series of murders committed seven years ago. Her father turns out to be the island's sherriff and it's made obvious that he and Abby have a rocky past.
There are seemingly countless other characters that make up the cast, but only a select few were established this time around. Judging by the pilot, my guess would be that the killer is one of the guests and the audience will have to narrow down the suspects week by week. It should only get easier as we're told one or two of the attendees will bite the dust each week.
I have high hopes for this series. While the pilot wasn't exactly fast paced, there are several angels that are established including a few characters who could very well be responsible for the slayings to come. With the way things played out this episode, I'd be willing to bet their are endless twists and turns awaiting in the forthcoming episodes. The only way to discover the killer's identity is to tune in each week as the dead willl eventually outnumber the living.
