Editor reviews
It's been a long time since I've stumbled upon a motion picture that left me breathless. This year appeared to be another dull span of mediocre cinematic disappointments upon which my anxiety was inevitably crushed thus leaving me drenched in hopelessness as another year proved to be an utter waste. Then, the ratings sky rocketed upon the theatrical arrival of a little film called "No Country For Old Men". Even with such solid reviews, however, I couldn't help feeling skeptical as my expectations in regards to film had dropped severely. Fortunately, almost immediately after the opening credits, an unseen strap had unknowingly taken hold of me and I found myself willingly glued to my seat anticipating every second that was to come. "No Country For Old Men" is a damn near perfect combination of sheer terror and jolting excitement. I had set aside anything and everything I knew about motion pictures. It was almost as if the world had stopped dead in its orbit as the wonderful imagery of the film continued to take hold of me. I have never been thus heart struck by a film, ever. "No Country For Old Men" is the perfect film, nothing more, nothing less proving essentially why I love movies.
Based on a novel by Cormac McCarthy and masterfully co-directed by helmers Ethan and Joel Coen (Fargo), this suspenseful thriller follows a regular Joe who finds $2 million in drug earnings, a killer relentlessly hunting him down and a sheriff seeking the both of them.
"Men's" actors are superb, a sensational combination of the industry's most talented consisting of such favorites as Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin. Their performances are top notch, among the best I've seen and surprising it wouldn't be to see any one of this trio snagging an Oscar.
Possibly the only aspect of "Men" that could raise a brow is the concept, which though not the most original, should go unnoticed to the average movie-goer. The building of tension and sneaky humor are solid additions to the script which also consists of clever dialogue between our characters that keeps the film racing along and our hearting beating rapidly every step of the way.
The direction is spectacular with vivid imagery and extraordinary shots of rural America, remotely distant and unbearably frightening.
Without second guessing, "No Country For Old Men" should take this year's Academy Award for Best Picture with ease as it's without a doubt the year's best and possibly the decade's. This is a brilliant movie-going experience with its tremendous acting, tight plot, sneaky humor and complex themes. An absolute must see! Don't miss it for the world!
