The Battle of the Sexes is the plot point that The Ugly Truth builds itself upon. Too bad it fell apart 15 minutes in. The Ugly Truth definitely is Ugly, because it had a lot of potential. Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl are 2 of the hottest talents in Hollywood, so why does this movie fall short? Maybe the cast didn't do a great job with the material they had, maybe the writers didn't show anything original, or maybe this movie was bound to disappoint simply because its yet another half-assed romantic comedy.
I respect Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl a lot, but even 2 stars of their caliber couldn't salvage this movie. I knew Butler was going to be a huge star when i first saw him in Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life. And Heigl is an award-winning actress who has been in front of the camera most of her life. She once complained that Judd Apatow's Knocked Up, in which she starred, was way too "guy-centric and made the women humorless shrews."
Well The Ugly Truth comes off as more of a sexist, "guy-centric" movie than Knocked Up did, and that's got to strike a nerve seeing as how Heigl was an executive producer on this pile. There are a few jokes here and there that make you laugh, but definitely not enough to keep you entertained. Now i'm not saying this is completely bad movie, i'm just saying it could've been better.
