Summer blockbusters have been plentiful in the past few years, especially if they are movies that are trying to do remakes or reinvent a franchise. Movies like Star Trek, Transformers, Superman Returns, and Batman Begins have all been huge box office successes and have all drawn great reviews, but when it comes to reinventing a franchise, none do it like GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

This year has already been full up with hard hitting Sci-Fi summer blockbusters, with Star Trek and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and while they were great movies, they both pale in comparison next to GI Joe. Joe has it all, its got a great cast(with the exception of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but i'll get to that later) it has action that will blow you out of your seat, and its got a great story that you can pick right up and be immersed in for the next 2 hours.

I had heard early reports that the movie might not live up to the hype, as some people online seemed to have formed an opinion of the movie just by watching the trailer. The movie is all action from the get go and is visually stunning. There wasn't one point during the movie where i could see a single bad CGI effect. While the movie had a great cast, especially the beautiful Sienna Miller, i could not get over just how stupid the decision was to cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Cobra Commander. i'm sorry but i have to use a WTF here. Other than that, the movie was excellent. I recommend it to anybody. Great Movie!!!

Didn't George Lucas do well when he retained the merchandising rights to Star Wars and made himself a princely sum? Now the toys and cartoons that followed in the 80s are laying claim to their own space on the silver screen and our DVD shelves.

For G.I. Joe the toy stand-ins play a constant game of "my guns bigger than yours" against a collection of larger upon larger video game levels with numerous CGI elemnents constructed on a massive scale and yet fail to have any actual depth or awe to them. When Duke and Ripchord don their accelerator suits it's every 12 year olds wet dream as various armour from Bungies Halo game series are knocked off and fully rendered in front of them.

The lesson to be learned from the success of TRANSFORMERS was not to adhere to closely to the original charactrs look or story. Stephen Sommers and co. toss out another template inhibited toy tie-in with no regard to story, structure or characterisation that comes off as a remake of the STREETFIGHTER movie. Is there anyone in the world who genuinely believed this had any potential to be a good romp never mind a good film? We don't expect art but blockbusters can be dumb and fun not just numb. This should have been killed at the first pitch meeting as should all auspicions toward making any other toy themed movies. No He-Man please Mattel no matter how jealous you get of Hasbros big fat pay days.
