I really can't find a connection between the vast amount of negative buzz and Joby Harold's thriller "Awake". From the film's exposition to the jaw-dropping finale, I was drawn into the gripping story-line, anticipating the moments to come. That's not to say the film is a perfect picture as it holds a fair share of errors. Nevertheless, I was exceptionally involved, and lately, that's proven difficult to come across.
The first segment is rather lengthy, but it does a magnificent job in solidifying the segments to come. From there on, it's twist and turns, chills and thrills. You see, once Clay is put to sleep, he suffers from 'anesthetical awareness', a condition where the patient is awake, feeling every slice and dice and hearing every word that comes out of the doctors' mouths. Eventually, a startling truth is revealed and he's left fighting to keep his paralyzed body alive long enough to share the truth with his loved ones.
I'll admit, I saw a vast majority of the twists coming, but still, the script is well structured and cleverly executed leaving the heart of the viewer pounding until the stunning climax.
"Awake" is a surprisingly fresh thriller and an unexpected work of art. Combining atmospheric elements, a solid script and terrific performances, this is a suspense filled feature you won't want to miss!
