The criteria for judging a comedy comes down to one single thing: does it make you laugh? If a comedy makes you laugh it doesn’t even necessarily have to be a good movie. Sometimes you get a comedy that’s a great movie with only a few laughs, and other times a movie that is incredibly funny but not very good. With a drama if it’s not a good movie then there is no point in seeing it; there is no redeeming factor at all. But with a comedy, even if it’s not that good, if it makes you laugh it will hold a special place in your heart. This movie falls somewhere in the middle of this spectrum.

“Horrible Bosses,” is a dark comedy about three guys trying to kill their respective bosses. This movie is pretty funny and pretty good. It wasn’t the kind of movie where you’re laughing every second of it, but it was still funny. And dark comedies are always better than any other kind because they can go more disturbing and therefore hilarious places. The cast in this movie is great. Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day have great chemistry and are all hilarious people. There isn’t one unfunny person in the whole movie. Structurally the plot develops in a satisfying way. Is it absolutely ridiculous and unbelievable that Charlie Day would want to kill Jennifer Aniston’s character for sexually harassing him? Yes, but just go with it. It’s funnier than if he had another horrible male boss.

While it may not be the best or even funniest movie this year, this movie is a lot of fun. And it’s definitely worth seeing once. It’s full of really funny and unexpected jokes, and it veers off into some really dark places. But those places will either make you uncomfortable, in which case you have no sense of humor, or they will make you laugh really hard.
