Aliens eh? Alright, whatever, let’s do this thing. So, I don’t believe in aliens. Not even a little bit. I just barely believe in humans, so aliens are bullshit. The fact of the matter is the entire existence of life on earth feels like a nanosecond to the rest of the universe so the chance of another planet experiencing the same thing at the exact same nanosecond is more improbable than the universe being made in seven days. But who cares, in fact alien culture can be kind of fun. It’s why I love the X-files. It’s like believing in Santa Claus, that’s super fun when you’re a kid right? And you wouldn’t go around telling kids there’s no Santa Claus because then you’d just be a fucking dick.
“Paul,” takes all the fun of alien enthusiasm and crams it into one funny movie. I love Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. If you haven’t watched their brilliant show “Spaced” go do it right now. Drop everything and watch it. There are only 14 episodes; you can literally watch the whole thing in one lazy afternoon. Not to mention their movies. I thought it was kind of weird that they have taken a break from working with the amazing Edgar Wright, but he’s off making incredible films so what can you do. In the film the two buffoons encounter a small alien and go on a road trip adventure to try and keep him from being killed by the feds and get him back to his home planet. No surprises plot wise, despite their efforts at the end. But that’s not why you should see the movie. It’s just a fun and easy way to spend a couple hours.
So this movie was funny enough. With special honors going to Kristen Wiig, who steals every scene she has ever been in ever. The whole cast is great. As far as Pegg and Frost are concerned, the film isn’t really as good as their previous ventures. It may have been a mistake bringing their productions across the pond. But nevertheless one more funny thing that they can check off their list. By the way, I am totally aware of how not helpful this review is. See it, don’t see it, whatever. It’s not bad by any means, but it’s not great. Flip a coin.
