First off, I want to get across that "Observe and Report" was filmed before "Paul Blart: Mall Cop". So those who claim the Jody Hill directed picture is a rip-off need to do a little more research.
Released earlier on in the year, "Observe and Report" was a comedy with a lot or promise with stars such as Seth Rogen and Ray Liotta on board. Sadly, the film didn't receive much positive buzz and those who hadn't seen the flick felt discouraged thus taking everbody else's word rather than seeing it for themselves.
Truthfully, Jody Hill's movie is surprisingly side-splitting. Like most, I wasn't expecting much. I did see "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" before this and thought it was a horrific disaster. With a story-line so similar, why would "Observe and Report" be any different? Fortunately, it was and there was a significant difference at that.
Ronnie (Seth Rogen) works as a security guard at a suburban mall where he fantasises about dating stuck-up cosmetics employee Brandi (Anna Faris). Unfortunately, a mysterious flasher is tormenting people in the parking lot and someone is robbing the mall's stores, which brings Detective Harrison (Ray Liotta) in to investigate. Threatened by Harrison's status as a real cop, Ronnie vows to hunt down the flasher and apprehend the burglar.
The film was unpredictable. The writer, Jody Hill had several tricks up his sleeve and there were moments where I was both pleased and utterly shocked at the same time. Of course, only Seth Rogen could pull certain moments off.
The one-liners in the film are hysterical. Of course, the movie isn't perfect, but is any film? There are a few dull moments, but fortunately, the humerous side of the picture makes up for them.
Overall, "Observe and Report" is a laugh-out-loud comedy. It's one of those films where you either like it or hate it and I happened to like it. I admired Seth Rogen's confidence and Jody Hill did an amazing job putting everything together. This is definitely recommended.
