As an actor, Adam Sandler is as predictable as they come, playing the same character in one form or another for years. Whether its Billy Madison, The Water Boy or Mr. Deeds, rest assured, Sandler has the air headed, self centered wanna be ladies man role down solidly. In latest headliner “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan”, the actor gives his fans a delightful treat. While his latest offbeat role bears much similarity to past characters, most notably Austin Powers, it’s certainly nice to see Sandler attempting to escape the one dimensional cage he’s been held captive in for so long.
The screenplay was penned by Adam Sandler who’s humor has become concentrated to a point that it’s just not funny anymore. Fortunately, one of the genres most respected figures in regards to screenwriting, Judd Apatow, lends a hand in developing a surprisingly compelling story-line, several memorable one-liners and a new face in the realm of comedies, the Zohan.
One of the most problematic aspects resides somewhere in the middle segment where the film becomes tangled up in a romantic sub plot that fits nicely in with the overall product at first, but quickly becomes an annoying itch that won’t go away. A quick summary, the first segment is an outrageous laugh fest, the middle segment is utterly dull but once the film reaches the third act, it’s a hysterical climax up until the end credits.
The writers are clever in interlacing current events into their script. Seriously, what comedy as of late is based around the political issues taking place in the Middle East? Of all the long string of subjectively similar releases, regardless of the genre, “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan” is hands down one of the most entertaining to watch.
Prior to stepping foot in the theater, my expectations were extremely low due entirely to Adam Sandler being a big part of the production. Fortunately, "You Don't Mess With the Zohan" exceeds my expectations and by a long shot I might add. It's a stupid, yet hilarious motion picture that never takes its self seriously and benefits tremendously in not doing so!
