It truly seems like ages since we’ve seen Mel Gibson in action. For awhile, the “Lethal Weapon” star was on a roll, yet after his drunk driving scandal back in 2006, he hasn’t been heard of since…until now. In “Edge of Darkness”, Mel portrays a Boston detective who’s life begins to crumble when his daughter turns up ill. After deciding to take her to the hospital, they don’t get as far as the front porch before a masked man shoves a shotgun in his daughter’s face and pulls the trigger. Of course, Mel’s character does what all loving father’s would do and sets out on a hunt for the soulless individual responsible for her slaying. As he closes in on his target, he begins to realize that things aren’t always what they seem.
“Edge of Darkness” is based on the 1985 British mini-series and written by Oscar winner William Monahan (The Departed) and Andrew Bovell. It’s a gritty thriller that truly hit the heart. Though practically unheard of until a few months before it’s release, this is a film that showcases one of Mel Gibson’s most noteworthy performances. His character is a man of many negative emotions but are masked by an aging human being who has strived to stay on the right path for the sake of his child. The anger that has been buried inside explodes to the surface with the realization that his life has become meaningless. It’s a kill or be killed world and when there’s nothing else to live for, it’s takes more than a bullet to damage a lifeless body.
The writing is passionate. The characters are of great importance to Monahan thus their actions and dialogue are developed with meaning. The direction is top-notch and the editing is slick and reminiscent of the “Bourne” franchise. That’s not a bad thing considering the editors were nominated for a couple of Academy Awards for their work on “The Bourne Ultimatum”. The actors are really the cherry on this cinematic treat. Mel Gibson obviously stands out more than others, but there’s no ‘I’ in ‘team’ here and we couldn’t ask for a more group of actors.
“Edge of Darkness” definitely has moments of confusion which could have ultimately led to disappointment but fortunately, the film is so fast-paced that there’s little time to dwell on such insignificant flaws. This is a pure, high-octane thriller that leaves viewers guessing up to the end. This is an absolute must-see for the true film buff.
